Pot guide
Find the right pot size, learn the steps, and discover the best clear pots to watch your plants thrive.
Match the pot to the root ball — not the foliage. Going too big is one of the most common repotting mistakes.
How to measure your pot
Measure the diameter across the top opening (rim to rim) in inches — that's the number nurseries use. Ignore the height. If the pot is tapered or square, measure the widest point at the top. A standard 6" pot is 6 inches across the top, not the bottom.

Roots coming out the drainage holes, circling the surface, or the plant drying out within 1–2 days are the real signals. Don't repot on a calendar — repot when the plant tells you.
Match the pot to the root ball, not the foliage. Larger jumps leave excess wet soil around the roots — that's how root rot starts, not overwatering.
If there are no pests, no rot, and the soil is in good condition: you can drop the entire root ball into fresh mix without disturbing it. If you want to check roots or refresh the substrate fully: gently loosen only the outer roots. Never yank or shake aggressively.
Add 1–2 inches of fresh mix to the bottom first. Set the plant so the soil line sits about 1 inch below the rim. Fill around the sides gently — do not pack the mix tight. Roots need oxygen.
Water until it runs freely from the drainage holes. Place back in its usual light. No fertilizer for 3–4 weeks. New white root tips within 7–14 days means the plant is happy.
Clear pots let you see moisture levels, root health, and whether your substrate is breaking down — no guessing.
